... their future, not our past.

As a tech integration specialist, I love this line, "We need to educate students for their future, not our past." I interpret this to mean that we need to take advantage of technology to 'grab' students. I have taught technology to all levels and students always seem to be excited about their project. So, I believe projects utilizing technology motivate and excite students, but do they teach?

How exactly do we prepare them for their future? My kindergarten daughter might retire around the year 2070. What types of careers will she have available to her? The latest version of the Did You Know 2.0 video states that we are currently educating students to use technology that hasn't been invented yet and to solve problems that aren't even problems yet! It also states that the top 10 In Demand jobs of 2010 were not jobs in 2004. What are the top 10 jobs for 2010? What careers are forming right now that will be in demand for 2015?

So... how can we be sure we are truly preparing them for THEIR future?

I am very interested in learning how to best equip kindergartners to use technology--so they will be as ready as they can be for 1st grade technology.

As a world language educator, I am very excited to see how we can use technology to communicate with speakers of the native language in authentic ways. Imagine how many more venues we have access to now than even 10 yrs. ago! Technology is already like a second language for our high school students, and I am looking forward to using it as a venue for them to learn Spanish more. When possible, I would love to take the kids out of the text book and put them in situations where they are able to make real life connections with speakers from around the world.

  5. I have tried blogging with my students using a book. I found it to be effective with some and not with others (just like a discussion in a "real" classroom). I am excited about integrating technology into my environmental science classes. I would like to utilize the lab pro equipment that we have to take readings of environmental parameters at some of our wetland sites and create a website to store the data so that students can access the data.

I am excited to learn as much about this technology as my students seem to already know. I use my smart board daily, but with limited use for the students. I want my students to be excited about the technology and really learn from it.

Wow! Watching the video really drives home the idea that the best thing we can do for our students is to teach them to think independently. I can teach them to use technology but it will be outdated before they can use it in the workplace. If I can excite them about learning and using technology, maybe they will continue their education outside the classroom so they will survive in the workplace.

As a Spanish teacher, I can't wait to use this technology as another way to learn the language and communicate with other Spanish speaking countries. I believe the students will benefit from this and will make learning fun!

  9. I was looking for this video for a few days now, and sure enough I find it by accident on my Industrial tech teacher from High schools website. That's just awesome.... By the way, I am working for Boeing now.. I guess that aviation course paid off?
